English Students Write a Book

by sierra heesacker
Lakeview High School offers many college courses for the senior students to attend. One of these courses includes college English, advised by Mrs. Kelly Schaad. Schaad also teaches Speech 10, English 12, and plays a major role in prom as the committee advisor. This quarter, the College English classes collaborated together to write a book.
“I thought is was really fun and helped us with our creativity and humor, along with showing our humor,” answers Loseke when asked what he thought about the recent project they did in college English. He is in Schaad’s 5th period college English class, which he says is his favorite period of the day. Each student individually wrote their own chapter to form their book. This indeed, required teamwork. College English students had to brainstorm ideas, and together come up with a theme for their story. They next had to come up with enough chapters so that each person could participate in writing one. The difficulty was conversing with the student who wrote the previous chapter, so it would make it all come together and make sense.
"College English is one of my favorite classes because I love to read and write,” adds Loseke, “Plus Mrs. Schaad is funny and keeps us entertained, her room also smells very nice”, Many students would agree that Schaad is the reason they love the class so much. The senior class will now finish out their high school English by making their memory books. These are books that they will be able to keep with them for the rest of their lives. Each senior makes their own memory book, to get graded on, about their whole life. Even though they get graded on their work, many of the students enjoy and look forward to it.

Students of the Month

by sierra heesacker
Lakeview High School students value education and high determination. This is why they have the monthly reward of the Student of the Month. This gives acknowledgement and recognition to a student who deserves it.
“I was surprised and honored when I heard that I was the student of the month,” stated junior Megan Morton. She was in the library printing papers when a teacher came up to her and congratulated her. Morton didn’t even know she was picked until that moment. That was not the only congratulations that Morton got through the month that she was chosen.
Being the student of the month is a huge achievement. Teachers and staff are always looking for students who stand out in areas of hard work, determination, dedication, and good grades. Students must also be friendly and set a good example for the rest of the student body. They have been writing post cards to send out to those worthy students. Many students at Lakeview show these characteristics; it's a tough decision to decide who will be the student of the month.
“I really liked getting a free t-shirt”, says Morton. Not only does the student of the month get recognition from teachers and other students of the school, but they also get a ‘Viking Way’ shirt to commemorate the honor. Way to go, Megan!

Viking Fight Fort Calhoun

As the Lakeview Vikings kick off the Homecoming night with a big win. Homecoming night proved successful for the football team as they took on the Patriots of Fort Calhoun High School. The Viking dominated the field 19-7 starting with a 25-yard kick by sophomore Cadge Janssen.
“The hard work on defense in practice,” is what contributed to this week’s win said sophomore quarterback Jaden Johnson. Johnson assisted in both touchdowns scored in Friday’s game. Handing the ball to senior Dakota Prorok and then throwing an 8-yard pass to senior Dillon Sprunk in the endzone sealed the game for the Vikings. Sprunk added two more to the scoreboard with a tackle in the endzone for a safety.
The Vikings continue to focus on the fundamentals of the field. Coach Kurt Frenzen’s team is looking at a different blocking scheme to make sure they account for all the defenders. As they prepare to take on O’Neill they have discussed and looked at different plays to add.
“They haven’t been scored on yet,” noted Johnson. The Vikings travel to O’Neill, Nebraska, on Friday to take on the undefeated Eagles of O’Neill who just shut out the Boone Central Cardinals 38-0. “If the linemen up front can make blocks, we should be able to find seams to run through,” said sophomore running back Jacob Frenzen. Frenzen had 24 carries for 135 yards in the game against Fort Calhoun.

Volleyball Teams Struggle against Stanton

The Lady Vikes had a great win against Stanton at the Reserve and Junior Varisty volleyball game on Tuesday.
“I thought we played really good together. We had the basic fundamentals down, took care of the ball on our side of the net efficiently, and our communication was key,” said junior outside hitter Jessica Kapels. The team had strengths and weaknesses on the court. “Our hitting was excellent. We put the ball where their players weren’t and that helped us get points and win the game. Also, we had a lot of girls ace the Mustangs. We could tell that they were getting frustrated with our serves, and that helped boost our confidence even more. But we didn’t do so hot at getting our passes to our setter. That caused us to be a little upset and we struggled with serve receive,” noted Kapels.
Even though the Lady Vikes had a positive win and attitude, there were also some things that they needed to work on as a group to finish even stronger. On the things they may try to do differently, Kapels adds, “Having more energy on the court. We played good and all, but we weren’t really too excited when we were scoring points. Nobody was really into the game that much, and I felt like that would have caused us to slow down a little.”
“We need to really work on our serve receive. That is going to be our main focus at practice. Also, we need to work on drop and drive. Our libero was having some troubles getting to the ball quicker, and that should have been the wings’ jobs. Lastly, we should work on getting to our base a little quicker so we’re ready for the ball to come back on our side.”

Softball Honors Aurora Teammate

Thursday night Lakeview High School softball team faced off against Aurora. This was senior night for upperclassmen at Lakeview. This was also, the last home game of the softball season and the last game played on Lakeview turf for the seniors.
“Aurora just recently lost someone to their team who was battling cancer, so we wanted to respect that,” noted senior Rayna Whitmore. The Lakeview softball team felt as though they should honor them in some way to show their respect for the other team. A few members of the softball team got together and spent four hours making bows for players to wear on Thursday night. There were also three yellow bows scattered around on the field, as yellow is the childhood cancer awareness color.
“We came out strong on the offensive side, but the defense wasn’t as clean,” said Whitmore.  Lakeview came out strong at the start, but when it came down to it, Aurora came out on top 8-4.  The Lakeview softball team had more hits when they were up to bat, than Aurora did. However, Lakeview struggled to stop the ball on the defensive side, letting Aurora have more runs.
Lakeview’s softball team will now be working hard on their defense tomorrow, as they get ready to head to Central City for their tournament this weekend.

Volleyball Teams Travel to York

by morgan iverson
Coming off the weekend losing to both Twin River and Bishop Newman in the Scotus Tournament, the Lakeview varsity team was prepared to fight in York last night. The varsity squad swept York in three bringing their record to 3-2.
“I saw that we had more energy on the court and we pushed for every point," said senior outside hitter Alexis Beiermann. The girls continued to work hard until they ended each play with the Vikings coming out on top. They finished in two tight sets. "Getting the win at 28-26 in the first set was a big step forward for us and then earning a 3-set sweep over a good conference opponent showed some consistency we haven't shown yet," said head coach K.C. Belitz.
The freshman team and the reserved team started the night taking control of the court and finishing the game in two sets. Although junior varsity players didn’t come out with a win they still pushed the Dukes into three sets. “We worked pretty hard on a couple of things, and it definitely helped us in the game. It wasn’t our normal pre-game because we were tired, but it was worth it," said Beiermann.
"Our team's strength is simple: balance. We have to be able to spread the ball around to all five offensive options for us to be successful," said Belitz. At every level, the teams will all work on attack efficiency going into the games against Central City tomorrow night.
